There is a new kind of mobility vehicle about and it’s faster, highly practical and ultimately very stylish – even for teenagers! Mobility dealerships such as The Mobility Centre in Bristol are realising that this new Electric Vehicle (EV) called the Powatryke Cruiser caters for a niche in the Mobility trade and opens up a world of possibilities for customers and dealers alike.
The Mobility Centre in Bristol which has two sites in the city, in St George and Westbury-on-Trym, has taken stock, and is showcasing the new Powatryke at its Westbury-on-Trym showroom. The bright blue tricycle is in fact a unique kind of vehicle. This electric battery powered tricycle is not compromised by the same rules as standard mobility vehicles which are limited to very slow speeds for legal reasons.
Derek Winstone, Manager of the stores said of the new electric battery powered tricycle: “It’s totally unique. It stands outside our showroom at the Westbury-on-Trym shop and sits in the pedestrian precinct in full view of passers-by, that’s how proud we are of this bike. For us this bike is a sort of half-way house or pre-mobility vehicle. It encourages those who are losing mobility to still use what mobility they have left whilst giving them a very good method of transport. If someone can’t get very far but still have some mobility left in their legs then this vehicle is there for them but still encourages them to use their legs to a degree and they can keep themselves reasonably mobile rather than just sitting on a scooter.
“What’s more, this vehicle is nippy! It goes a lot faster than the standard mobility vehicles which are restricted to 8mph. This one goes at 15mph on throttle power. It appeals to a younger generation also who are often more style conscious. This vehicle can go further and faster than its counterparts on the market at the moment so it has a real practical impact on users’ lives and can make getting around more of a pleasure than a chore.”
The Powatryke is arguably a new kind of beast in the Mobility market. Whilst it is a pedal tricycle, it has an ultra low ‘step through’ which means the rider only has to raise their leg six inches off the ground to step over the frame. Once on the tricycle the rider can if required rely totally on throttle power and not tax the legs for around 20 miles on one charge or if they pedal as well a single charge can last up to around 30 miles. A basket on the back can carry shopping bags and the width of the vehicle allows it to go through most doors. Mobility and bicycle dealers around the country are now profiting from this vehicle that has a niche for those who find it hard but not impossible to use their legs.
The Powatryke is the latest development from EV specialists Powabyke. Nick Child, MD of Powabyke said: “The new Powatryke is a third generation product for us, since launch the product sales demand has often outstripped supply, the latest model is a cracking product. It has the ability to create and capture a niche market that fits nicely between the standard two wheel market and the mobility market, basically it’s a quasi mobility product for people who can no longer ride a bike and don’t want or need a full mobility product’’.
