Warm Welcome for Record Breaker in Lowestoft

For a man who was told he may never walk again, 66 year old Eddie Sedgemore is no stranger to a challenge, and having just completed a tour of the UK on a Powabyke, he's also proved he's got what it takes to be a record breaker.

Eddie in Lowestoft

Eddie, a street cleaner for Bath and North East Somerset Council, has just completed a 1,912 mile journey on a Powabyke X-byke to attempt to claim the World Record for the Longest Distance on a Motorized Bicycle, and was given a warm reception at his finishing point in Lowestoft.

The remarkable feat is Eddie's second World Record. He set out on 9th May from Land's End in Cornwall, and over the past month has visited the southern, northern, eastern and western extremes of the UK mainland, raising money for the British Heart Foundation along the way.

On arrival in Lowestoft, Eddie was greeted by Mayor Frank Mortimer, and Neilina Walker from the British Heart Foundation shop on London Road North.

Following an accident in which he was knocked unconscious 27 years ago, Eddie was told that he may never be able to walk again, but showing true grit and determination, he got back on his feet, and all being well has powered his way to his second world record.

Eddie will now submit his evidence to Guinness in order for them to confirm he has broken the record.

Eddie completed his journey on a Powabyke X-byke - a lightweight electric cycle, technically classed as an electric mobility vehicle. Although the vehicle looks like an ordinary bike, the powacell battery has given Eddie's bike a range of approximately 10-15 miles per charge, and he was also able to pedal to increase his range.

Eddie said, "I'm pleased to have completed my journey. It has been a long four weeks but every mile has been worth it. I've visited the Southern, Western and Northernmost extremes of the UK mainland, and it's a pleasure to finish my journey at the easternmost point of Lowestoft."

"I would like to thank the Mayor of Lowestoft and Neilina Walker for giving me such a warm welcome, and I would also like to thank Powabyke who have made the whole challenge possible."

The Mayor of Lowestoft, Cllr Frank Mortimer, said, "On behalf of the town I'm delighted to welcome Eddie to Lowestoft, and congratulate him on what is an outstanding achievement. Eddie has set a marvelous example over the past few weeks, and has shown that with real determination it is possible to achieve your goals."

"By powering and pedaling his way around the country, Eddie has also helped to promote cycling as a greener mode of transport, and raise awareness about the work of the British Heart Foundation."
