So here I am, a middle aged-ish woman cycling up one of Bath's steepest hills and overtaking lycra-clad muscle-bound fitness-freak young men without a bead of sweat appearing on my brow.
I've been waiting years to get my leg over one of these and I'm not dissapointed. It's an electric bike which has been developed by a Bath company. It's clean and green, and almost the best fun you can possibly have!
Having tried several other versions of battery powered bikes over the years, none of which could get me to the top of Lansdown Hill, I was sure my test ride would be destined for failure. I whizzed down the hill and was delighted to find the brakes were efficient. Then I commenced the ascent and can only say I was totally amazed. Of course one has to pedal as well, but no more than going up a very minor slope. I was riding the five-gear version which was perfect, but there is also a 7-speed folder, a shopper with basket, a tricycle and a 21-speed top of the range model.
The Powabyke looks snazzy, it will do 20 miles per charge and costs 1.5 pence per mile. They cost from £539.00 including VAT. There's no tax or insurance needed, you can lock it up anywhere, and you can sail through Bath's bus gates instead of having to drive half way around the city. What better way to feel pure, wholesome, planet loving and fit. My only niggle is that I have to turn right whilst going uphill and you can;t turn the accelerator and give a hand signal at the same time. Perhaps indicators wouldn't go amiss.
Oh, I forgot my biggest niggle? I've got to give it back.
