Powabyke welcomes Livingstone’s vision for London
25/02/2008

With the recent announcement by Mayor of London Ken Livingstone that the capital could soon see significant investment to create cycling super-highways throughout the city, an electric bike manufacturer believes we are on the dawn of a new era of two-wheeled transport.

With the news that £400million is likely to be invested in ‘super-cycleways’, electric bikes that offer assisted cycling are fast becoming an even more attractive and viable prospect to the average commuter.

Powabyke Ltd have been supplying their innovative range of electrically assisted bikes to dealers throughout the UK for nearly ten years, and have sold tens of thousands of vehicles to people of all ages across the world.

The last decade has not only seen a dramatic change in the way people think about transport, it has also seen impressive developments in technology, allowing Powabyke to create stylish, high performance electric vehicles with numerous benefits for the cyclist that don’t cost the earth - literally.

There are obvious advantages for using electric cycles around the capital. For commuters, the electric motor assistance will enable them to turn up at work without having broken a sweat and thus not needing a shower on arrival.  Powabykes are also congestion charge exempt and free to park, saving you hundreds of pounds over the year that would be otherwise lost using a car.

Managing Director of Powabyke, Nick Child commented, “Commuters today are more environmentally conscious than ever, and we welcome the proposal to create a designated cycling network that will make it easier for these people to cycle around London.”

“The news that London is planning cycle highways across the city is absolutely brilliant and should be applauded and supported by all. It shows great vision by Ken Livingstone and the Transport for London team, and it’s needed in London on an asap basis.”

“It’s not easy for everyone though, and the thought of a ten mile cycle to work can be a daunting prospect if you’re a little out of shape or if you have a heavy load to transport. Powabykes can give you that extra ‘electrical’ assistance when you need it, making cycling a viable alternative for most of us.”

“There have been exciting developments in electric cycles over the past few years, with new lightweight lithium batteries and sleeker designs opening up a broader market. I’m proud to say that Powabyke have moved with modern technology to continue to offer great products to our customers, and we will continue to do so as more and more people get back into cycling.”

A study of electric cycle users by Leeds University and Powabyke found that many families were replacing a second car with electric cycles as a cost effective, greener alternative using them to replace car journeys, commuting to work and everyday journeys. The average user covers an average of 1,200 miles per annum, compared to the average of 120 miles that a non-electric bike does.
